#What it is

Big Five (also called the Five-Factor Model or by the OCEAN acronym) is a psychometric model that describes human personality across five dimensions. It is the personality framework with the strongest scientific validity documented in organizational psychology journals.

#The five factors

  • O. Openness: intellectual curiosity, taste for novelty, creativity
  • C. Conscientiousness: discipline, organization, follow-through, self-control
  • E. Extraversion: energy in social interactions, assertiveness
  • A. Agreeableness: cooperativeness, empathy, trust in others
  • N. Neuroticism: emotional reactivity; emotional stability is the opposite pole

Each dimension is a continuous scale, not a binary category.

#How it's measured

Via a structured psychometric inventory, not "which animal would you be" and not MBTI. Items measure self-perception in concrete situations. Validated inventories typically have 50 to 240 items; short forms (10-20 items) exist with acceptable reliability.

#Why it's used in hiring

Big Five has documented predictive validity for job performance, especially conscientiousness, which correlates positively with performance across essentially every job category. Not as strongly as cognitive ability tests, but enough to be useful signal.

#What Big Five does NOT measure

  • Does not diagnose anything: it's not DSM, it's not clinical
  • Does not classify into types: unlike MBTI, Big Five measures degree on scales, not discrete types
  • Does not say "good" or "bad": it says high/low on each axis, and each combination serves different contexts
  • Is not stable in milliseconds: Big Five captures patterns; day-to-day mood doesn't move the score meaningfully

#Typical professional fit

  • Relational sales: high extraversion + high agreeableness tend to help
  • Deep research: high openness + high conscientiousness
  • Customer support: high agreeableness + high emotional stability
  • Entrepreneurship: high openness + low neuroticism

These are tendencies, not rules. People with "unusual" profiles perform well all the time. Big Five is one signal among several, not a filter.
