Job Description

Position Overview

The Database Architect designs, implements, and optimizes the database architecture for Intelerad's medical imaging solutions. As a strategic technical leader, the incumbent creates scalable, secure, and high-performance systems for our PACS, RIS, and enterprise imaging platforms. These platforms serve healthcare institutions and imaging centers worldwide. The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in database design, data modeling, and performance optimization in large-scale, mission-critical environments. This role requires balancing technical excellence with business needs in the healthcare IT sector, in collaboration with engineering, infrastructure, and product teams.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Design and implement enterprise-wide database architectures for Intelerad's medical imaging platforms. Ensure the scalability, performance, and reliability required to support diagnostic workflows for healthcare institutions and patient care delivery. These architectures cover various deployment models, including on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.
  1. Develop and maintain comprehensive data models, schemas, and database documentation compliant with healthcare interoperability standards, including DICOM, HL7, and FHIR. Optimize large-scale medical imaging data storage strategies and ensure efficient retrieval for clinical workflows.
  1. Establish and enforce database development standards, security protocols, and compliance frameworks to meet healthcare regulations, including HIPAA. Ensure data integrity, confidentiality, and availability across all database systems. Implement robust backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity strategies.
  1. Lead database performance improvement initiatives through query optimization, indexing strategies, and capacity planning. Proactively monitor system health and implement solutions that maintain sub-second response times. These response times are critical for real-time access to diagnostic imaging in clinical settings.
  1. Collaborate with software engineering, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to integrate database systems into application architecture. Evaluate and recommend database technologies and platforms. Provide technical leadership for database migration, upgrade, and modernization projects that support product innovation and operational excellence.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience

  1. At least 7 years of experience in database architecture, design, and administration. Demonstrated expertise in both relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra). Hands-on experience with large-scale, high-availability database environments.
  1. Proven expertise in data modeling, database design patterns, and normalization techniques. Creation of logical and physical data models that meet complex business requirements and support high-volume transactional systems.
  1. Excellent proficiency in database performance optimization, including query tuning, execution plan analysis, indexing strategies, and capacity planning. Experience with systems that process millions of transactions and manage petabyte-scale stored data.
  1. Extensive experience with cloud database platforms and services from AWS, Azure, or GCP. Knowledge of database migration strategies, hybrid architectures, and cloud-native database solutions.
  1. Deep knowledge of database security best practices, encryption methods, access control mechanisms, and regulatory compliance requirements. Specific experience with protecting healthcare data and HIPAA compliance.
  1. Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives, mentor development teams, and communicate complex technical concepts to stakeholders across the organization, whether they have a technical background or not.

Assets and Special Requirements

  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Software Engineering.
  1. Experience with medical imaging system architecture, including PACS, RIS, VNA, or enterprise imaging platforms, and knowledge of healthcare data standards such as DICOM, HL7, and FHIR.
  1. Hands-on experience with distributed database systems, data replication strategies, and sharding. Knowledge of multi-region database architectures that support global healthcare operations.
  1. Proficiency in Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes and data integration tools. Experience designing data pipelines that meet business intelligence, analytics, and reporting needs.
  1. Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools, such as Terraform or CloudFormation, for database provisioning and management.
  1. Knowledge of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines for database deployment. Experience with automated database testing, schema version control, and migration automation.
  1. Professional certifications such as AWS Certified Database – Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle Certified Professional, or TOGAF certification.
  1. Experience working in agile development environments and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams within an organization that prioritizes remote work.
